Fourth Year Students at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art working with Marilynn Webb present this exhibition to draw the public’s attention to the ecological issue's around the commercial harvest of cockles (tuaki/tuangi) in the Otago area.
Concerned this disruption could cause irreversible damage to the harbours ecosystem this exhibition invites you to come for a walk on the beach....

Crab Houses
And other crustacean havens..

Benjamin Smith

25th October - 1st of November

Hours Thurs-Fri 10-3pm Sat-Sun 11-5pm

.."My work has developed from an interest in the objects that make their way into the harbour and their 'journey'. While snorkelling in different areas of the harbour I have been documenting with video and photography, the flotsam and jetsam that I have found. This had led me to salvage various objects. Through combining and working with these found materials I have developed new objects that offer themselves as both art objects and as actual houses for crabs. It is ultimately my intention to return the objects back to the harbour for further documentation as they establish their own ecosystems and continue on their journey..."

"ECLIPSE"
(The Second Coming)
An Installed Work by Adrian Hall.

19th. June - 9th July 2006

Dedicated to the people who helped save Aramoana from the smelter development twenty-five years ago.

......Commissioned by the Maritime Museum of Port Chalmer as a part of the 25th Anniversary of the anti-smelter campaign which prevented the building of an aluminium smelter at Aramoana. This project would have destroyed the community of Aramoana, and threatened the natural habitats of Otago Harbour.

'Eclipse' included images relating to the present Aramoana community, and an emblematic structure intended as a salute to the campaigners. This hints at the present peril the artist perceives to threaten Aramoana and many other parts of the South Island, through lifestyle developments and speculation.

Adrian Hall is a Cornish born artist of a peripatetic background, who first showed in Dunedin in 1983 at Red Metro. Later he made various time-based and installed works as a part of a residency at the School of Art, Dunedin in 2000. He has recently made his home at Aramoana, after some years in Port Chalmers. He has shown internationally, and in N.Z. at the N.A.G.N.Z., and other venues since being part the Barry Lett Gallery in Auckland in the early seventies.

"..Koputai Gallery and Project Space in Port Chalmers fills a void in the local art scene. ...Koputai's first exhibition showcases work by predomiantly local artists based in Port Chalmers and Aramoana, some of whom are masters students. If you enjoy art that makes you think, this gallery will definatley appeal..."by Joanne Campbell, taken from Art Review, Otago Daily Times Thursday 6 October 2005.
