KOPUTAI Project Space established in 2005
was run by Rachel Stephenson and available for solo or group shows
whose focus was on research and theory-based art practices.
Koputai
is the name of the bay directly in front of the gallery, now reclaimed
by Port Otago Ltd for the container and shipping terminal. In
Maori kopu is 'full' and 'womb', and tai
'water', referring to the depth of the bay and abundance of life.
The name recalls an incident when waka were taken by the high-rising
tide. 'Koputai!' was exclaimed to alert their owners.

Artist
in Residence Projects
Accommodation,
studio and gallery are provided to an artist for a fixed time
and project. There is no funding, therefore artists are to cover
their own rental costs. The artist can run workshops and exhibitions
to recover these expenses. We support, but do not submit, funding
applications. It is intended that the resident artist engages
with the local area in making new work.
Duration: up to 12 weeks.
